Seiffen Open-air Museum
The open-air museum is just across the road from the Landhotel zu Heidelberg. These historic houses, typical of the Ore Mountains, tell the story of the Ore Mountains and, in particular, the rich and varied historyof the region’s traditional wooden art.
See how past generations of people used to live and work in the Ore Mountains in lovingly decorated rooms. In the “Reifendrehwerk” wood turning workshop you can see the rare wood turning technique, which forms the basis for the carved animals and figures (Reifentiere and Reifenfiguren), an inherent part of Ore Mountain folk art, in action.
The “Tage des Handwerkes” (“Handicraft Days”) are held at the open-air museum twice a year on Ascension weekend and at the end of September. The whole museum is vibrant with activity on these days – with a wide variety of activities and demonstrations of traditional handicrafts. And it is a thrilling experience for children, too.
